Textron Aviation continues to redefine the light jet category with the introduction of the new Cessna Citation M2 Gen3. Building on the tremendous success of the M2 platform, the latest upgrade incorporates advanced cockpit technology including two of the most significant safety innovations ever introduced in business aviation: Garmin Autothrottle and Garmin Emergency Autoland.

The Citation M2 has long been recognized as a leader in the entry-level jet segment, offering exceptional performance, single-pilot capability, and the operating economics owners appreciate, along with a type rating (CE-525) that allows pilots to grow in airplane size, speed, and range without the time commitment of Initial Type Rating courses with each step up in the CJ family. The Gen3 takes those strengths even further by integrating automation technologies previously associated with much larger and more expensive aircraft.

One of the most notable enhancements is the addition of Garmin Autothrottle. Fully integrated with the Garmin G3000 avionics suite, the system automatically manages engine thrust throughout all phases of flight. By continuously adjusting power settings, Autothrottle helps maintain target airspeeds, improves fuel efficiency, and reduces pilot workload during critical flight operations. Whether climbing, descending, or executing an approach, pilots benefit from smoother aircraft handling and more precise speed management. The system also provides protection against over-speed and under-speed conditions, enhancing safety while allowing pilots to focus on strategic decision-making and situational awareness. Chris Brown, who captains a larger Citation aircraft that features the Garmin Autothrottle on the G5000 system, says, “Autothrottles really reduce pilot workload. Whether operated in FMS mode or manual, they work well through all phases of flight, including SIDS and STARS. If the Garmin Autothrottles on the M2 are anything like the ones on the G5000 system, pilots will enjoy the precision speeds and increased situational awareness, and benefit from the reduced workload.”

The Garmin Emergency Autoland feature represents a revolutionary advancement in aviation safety. In the unlikely event of pilot incapacitation, the system can automatically take control of the aircraft, communicate with air traffic control, select an appropriate airport, and navigate to the runway. It then performs a stabilized approach, lands the aircraft, and brings it to a complete stop; essentially, the only task it won’t perform is opening the cabin door. Passengers can activate the system with a dedicated button, providing an unprecedented level of confidence for owners and flight departments alike.

Beyond these technological advancements, the M2 Gen3 features a refined cabin designed for comfort and productivity, including wireless uploading of flight plans through Garmin’s GDL 60, enhanced ambient lighting, and an optional folding side-facing seat that increases flexibility for passengers and cargo. With a range of approximately 1,550 nautical miles and seating for up to eight occupants, the aircraft remains ideally suited for regional business and personal travel.

The Citation M2 Gen3 demonstrates how innovation is reshaping business aviation. By combining proven Citation performance with advanced automation systems, Textron Aviation has created an aircraft that improves efficiency and delivers the highest levels of safety and peace of mind available in the light jet market today.

For those who cannot wait for the M2 Gen3, select M2 Gen2 aircraft (factory-equipped with Garmin Autothrottle) will be eligible for a Garmin Emergency Autoland upgrade through a Service Bulletin process, expected to be released once the M2 Gen3 begins deliveries, planned for 2027.

FlightSafety International currently offers training on the Citation M2 with Autothrottle at its Wichita East campus, and for International customers at its Farnborough facility for both EASA and UK CAA pilots.
