When an aircraft sits unused for an extended period of time, many owners assume it can simply be parked and returned to service when needed. In reality, periods of inactivity can have a major impact on both the aircraft and its engines if proper preservation procedures are not followed.

Airframe and engine preservation is one of the most overlooked aspects of aircraft ownership, yet it plays a critical role in maintaining an aircraft’s condition, safety, and value.

Aircraft and engine manufacturers provide specific guidelines for how their products should be maintained during periods of inactivity. These procedures are designed to protect the aircraft from corrosion, moisture, contamination, and other forms of deterioration that can occur even while the aircraft is not flying.

The level of preservation required usually depends on how long the aircraft is expected to remain inactive.

For short periods of downtime, preservation may be relatively simple and include installing protective covers, running the engines periodically, and maintaining the aircraft batteries and environmental systems.

For longer periods of inactivity, the process becomes more involved. Fuel and oil systems may need to be stabilized, engine openings sealed, and special moisture-control materials installed to protect internal components from corrosion and damage.

While preservation procedures vary between manufacturers and aircraft types, the goal is always the same: protect the aircraft and engines so they can safely and reliably return to service.

Failure to properly preserve an aircraft can lead to expensive and sometimes avoidable problems, including:

  • Internal engine corrosion
  • Bearing and seal damage
  • Fuel system contamination
  • Reduced reliability
  • Increased maintenance costs
  • Unexpected repair or overhaul expenses

Improper preservation can also affect an aircraft’s resale value. Maintenance records are carefully reviewed during pre-purchase inspections, and missing or incomplete preservation documentation can raise concerns for prospective buyers and maintenance providers.

For aircraft enrolled on engine or maintenance programs, failing to follow manufacturer preservation requirements may also impact program eligibility or coverage.

The good news is that most of these issues are preventable with proper planning and maintenance oversight.

Whether an aircraft will be inactive for a few weeks or several months, owners should work closely with qualified maintenance providers to ensure the proper preservation procedures are followed and documented.

Protecting an aircraft while it is not flying is just as important as maintaining it while it is in service. Proper preservation protects the aircraft’s value, maintains its airworthiness, and avoids costly surprises when it is time to fly again.
